Wulingyuan: Tianzi Mountain & Bailong Elevator - core part of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
Wulingyuan, lying in the Wulingyuan District of Zhangjiajie (Dayong) City, covers the entire drainage basin of Suoxi Brook, which winds for 69 km through the site. The most notable feature, dominating about two-thirds of the site, are more than 3,000 quartzite sandstone pillars and peaks. Between the peaks are numerous ravines and gorges, many containing attractive streams, pools and waterfalls. The site also contains a number of karst features, notably some 40 caves which are concentrated on the banks of the Suoxi Brook and the southeast side of Tianzi Mountain. Spectacular calcite deposits are a major feature of many of these caves. 3,000 species of plant occur within the area, including some 600 species of woody plant; these are split fairly evenly between subtropical and temperate species. Many of the species are of value for timber, medical or ornamental purposes.
With the reputation of "Oriental Eiffel Tower", Bailong Skylift is a double-deck sightseeing elevator. It is one of world's top 11 creative elevators, which ranks with the fish tank elevator in Germany and the arch elevator in the United States. Tourists standing in the sightseeing elevator can enjoy the 48 independent stone peaks gathered into the "General Parade", feeling as if in a wonderland. Tianmen Mountain, literally the Heaven Gate Mountain, is a famous mountain firstly recorded in the history of Zhangjiajie. With an elevation of 1518.6 meters, it is only 8 kilometers far from the downtown area and is one of the most representative natural sceneries of Zhangjiajie. For a long time, Tianmen Mountain not only attracts worldwide attention by its miraculous and unique geographic landform, but also well known for its profound cultural connotations and famous colorful humanistic sites. It is revered as the soul of culture and spirit of Zhangjiajie and reputed as Number One Miraculous Mountain in Western Hunan. The main body of Tianmen Mountain is uniquely sky-scraping and domineering. With the highest elevation in the world, Tianmen Cave, the natural mountain-penetrating karst cave, hangs on the towering cliff. Tianmen Mountain Temple, with an area of over 10000 square meters, enjoys a booming pilgrimage ever since the Ming Dynasty. It is the Buddhist center of Western Hunan. The six unresolved mysteries in the past hundreds of years such as Opening of Tianmen Cave, Shadow of Guigu, and Auspicious Unicorn have added the mysterious and elusive atmosphere for Tianmen Mountain.
The scenic area of Yuanjiajie is a mountainous plateau with lush trees, misty air and overlapping peaks. The most famous attraction is the pillars of the universe, where the floating Hallelujah Mountains in the movie Avatar were shot. In addition, there are the Mihun Platform, "the first bridge under the heaven" and other major attractions. Dazhun platform is the best scenic spot surrounded by hundreds of stone peaks standing like extraordinary momentum. "The first bridge under the heaven", spanning betwenn two mountains, has a width of 2 meters, a width of 25 meters and a vertical height difference of 357 meters, which is the largest natural self-generated stone slab bridge ever found in the world.
Zhangjiaie Grand Canyon & Glass Bridge
Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon, a collection of mountains, water and caves, is a museum of karst landform where you can enjoy all the scenery of the north temperate karst terrain! In the valley, monkeys jump and birds sing, water is clear and air is fresh. With the change of altitude, plant belts vary generally. A glass bridge called Yuntiandu was built on the grand canyon crossing both sides of the peaks. It is 430 meters long, 6 meters wide. Its floors are all laid of transparent glass, and the whole project is without any steel. The glass bridge can function as bungee jumping platform and performance stage. It is the world's first cable-stayed alpine canyon glass bridge, and also the world's longest glass bridge. If you are not fear of heights, you must come to try! It is amazing and a lifetime experience to see the beautiful scenery of Zhangjiajie from the cloud!
Baofeng Lake, located in Suoxiyu Natural Reserve, is situated part way up the mountain range, 85 meters above the ground, and attains an altitude of 585 meters. Flowing through the high gorges, a body of crystalline and tranquil water is surrounded by emerald mountains. The lake out of its association with the Baofeng Mountain Range, hence the lake bears the name of Baofeng. With an average depth of 72 meters, Baofeng Lake covers an area of 15 hectares, having a capacity of 6 million cubic meters of water in total. The lake water comes from rainfall, mountain springs and underground streams, stays emerald all year around. Therefore, it is reputed as Paradise in the Human World. Main scenic spots in this area include: Baofeng Waterfall, Stone Gate Welcoming Guests, Peacock Displaying Colorful Tail, and Golden Toad Biting the Moon, Fairy Lady Reflected in the Lake and so on.
Huangshi Village is located in the south part of Zhangjiajie scenic area and is the largest and most concentrated viewing platform in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. The village is surrounded by cliffs and trees, on top of which is often cloudy. There is a saying that "if you do not ascend Huangshi Village, your tour to Zhangjiajie in in vain". When you get on the top of Huangshi Village, you can have a whole view of the mountain ranges nearby. To get to the top of Huangshi Village, you can take the cable car, or climb thousands of steps.
Yellow Dragon Cave
Yellow Dragon Cave, or the Huanglong Cave, is one of the foremost scenic areas in Zhangjiajie. It situated in Suoxiyu Natural Reserve, 20 minutes' driving from Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. It is the longest cave in Asia and also an incomparable realm of gigantic subterranean chambers, fantastic cave formations, and extraordinary features. Also it has been honored as magical karst cave both in China and around the globe. Yellow Dragon Cave belongs to a typical karst formation, and it is known to all that water plays an extremely important role in its shaping. Flowing into the fissures of the karst layer, water constantly dissolves the limestone rock, thereby widening the crevice. This process continues year after year thus the caves are created. Huanglong Cave covers a proven area of 100,000 square meters. The inner recess is divided into four layers, two dry ones and two possessing waterways. The natural wonders include: one natural reservoir, 2 underground rivers, 3 pools, 4 waterfalls, 13 grand halls, 96 passageways and hundreds of thousands of stalagmites, columns and stalactites.
Located in the northwest of Zhangjiajie, Yangjiajie is a kind of quartz sand and rock peak forest canyon landform, which is mainly characterized by its original natural beauty. Compared with Zhangjiajie and Yuanjiajie, Yangjiajie is more difficult for climbing, so there is less crowded, seems quiet and mysterious.
